El Jardín de los Sueños Café is the kind of Richmond coffee shop where there’s plenty to look at while you wait for your drink: pink walls, string lights, a garden-like entrance, a kids’ play area and a cabinet full of random trinkets left behind by visitors.
The café occupies a sprawling space near the freeway overpass that has had a few lives before this one. There was an indoor playground, a storefront church and a real estate office, where a neighbor said her father worked.

A mural covers one side of the building. Inside, there’s a pastry case, chalkboard menus and people with laptops who look like they are settling in for a work session.
We'd been here before, back when we stopped in for the Richmond Burrito Trail. At the time, the banner out front was still doing most of the talking.

Inside the entrance, a garden foyer with trellised vines and potted ferns leads into the café. A couple of campaign signs are standing there, Claudia and Ahmad, side by side. They're the two candidates who came out of the runoff and are now headed toward each other again in November. Nobody here seems ready to pick a side yet, least of all the foyer.
Out back, there’s a covered walkway, palm trees and picnic tables on artificial turf.
We ordered a mocha, a cappuccino and a vanilla latte. The total was $18.76.
The mocha leaned heavily toward chocolate. Compared with the other drinks we've tried on this crawl, there was less coffee coming through. It was more dessert than drink.
Inside El Jardín de los Sueños, dining tables and a coffee counter give way to a snack aisle stocked with Mexican candy and chips, and a bakery case running the length of the room toward the front door.
The cappuccino was solid. There was actual coffee flavor under the milk, which sounds like a low bar until you remember how many stops on this trail have missed it. It still wasn't Catahoula, which remains the one to beat.
The vanilla latte was the table favorite. It was balanced, had no bitter aftertaste, and came with actual microfoam instead of milk with a few bubbles dumped on top.
So where does El Jardín de los Sueños land? Somewhere in the middle of the pack.
It beats Kaleidoscope, where the coffee barely registered despite being the most expensive stop so far. It sits just behind Roma Caffe, which is still the table favorite.
