At Grandview Independent, we believe in second chances. So when our intrepid team pulled up to Kaleidoscope Coffee last week for our What’s the Buzz coffee adventure and it didn’t go well, we figured we would try again. While most of the team found their beverage of choice to be top shelf, one drink missed the mark entirely, necessitating a caffeinated do-over.
Kaleidoscope Coffee on Park Place in Point Richmond looks like a small, artsy coffee shop from the exterior, and it is, but it’s also surprisingly large with ample seating, a large counter, and tall ceilings. The warm brick decor harkens to the early days of Richmond when brick buildings were de rigueur and charm oozed from every corner.

On the morning of our first visit, the cafe was busy, so we waited patiently for the line to inch us closer to our desired level of caffeination. Once at the counter, we ordered our usual round and eagerly waited near the display of tasty treats for our drinks to arrive.
Our staff mocha man was pleased with his beverage, with its deep, chocolaty goodness. A little milder in terms of coffee flavor than some previously consumed mochas, but overall a nice drink. Our cappuccino connoisseur confirmed his drink was properly made and delightfully pleasant, but the doppio espresso con panna took a decidedly wrong turn down a dark, citrus-drenched alley.
While ordering the espresso con panna, the barista said the drink wasn't part of their menu; plus, they were sans whipped cream. She suggested another espresso beverage with a dollop of milk foam as a replacement for the cream. Espresso con panna is not a complicated beverage. But the drink's success is incumbent upon sips of very strong coffee making its way through sweet cream, providing a pleasant taste and much happiness.
What we received was entirely different.
Espresso – a double shot, mind you – swilled through a thin veil of milk foam is just not the same experience. Especially so because the roast on this day comes with a strong, citrusy finish that produces a powerful sour punch at the end of each sip. This is fine if it’s what you are looking for. Not so much if you are not a fan of decidedly sour coffee. Sadly, the only way to make this beverage drinkable was by adding a generous splash of kindly donated cappuccino to the cup.
Here’s where the do-over comes in.
Once back at Grandview HQ, we decided it would not be fair to provide a review based on a single experience when not all the key ingredients were available. Another tasting would be required.
Take two …
Back at Kaleidoscope, the sudden fear of a repeat result took over, so we ordered a simpler drink: a vanilla latte – a much safer option. But alas, no vanilla was available. Following a quick scan of the menu, we selected a hazelnut latte, something we had not previously tried. The result? A pleasant drink with smooth hazelnut notes that play nicely with the coffee’s bold flavor and scored bonus points for not being overly sweet. No citrus punch this time. Just a nice, enjoyable drink. Chaaa Ching!
Kaleidoscope roasts its own coffee beans and offers seating inside as well as on the patio; oh, and there's WiFi available so feel free to bring your laptop. Compared to other local coffee spots, the prices seem a little high, but reviews on Yelp indicate the cafe boasts a solid customer base and plenty of community support – though some reviewers note the staff isn't as friendly as one would hope for such a cute cafe.
