Richmond police arrested a murder suspect within hours of a fatal shooting Friday evening, crediting swift investigative work and a partnership with a neighboring police department.

Officers responded at approximately 6:27 p.m. to the 200 block of West Nevin Avenue after reports of gunshots and a person down.

"Upon arrival, officers located an adult victim suffering from gunshot wounds," Lt. Donald Patchin, department spokesman, said. "Officers immediately rendered aid and initiated life-saving measures; however, despite their efforts, the victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene."

During the investigation, officers identified a possible suspect and vehicle. Using Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reader technology, investigators tracked the suspect vehicle as it traveled from Richmond into Concord.

"Working in coordination with the Concord Police Department, Concord PD officers located the suspect and took him into custody late Friday night without incident," Patchin said. "The suspect was subsequently booked into jail on charges of murder."

The arrest came roughly eight hours after the shooting.

"The technology allowed investigators to rapidly track the suspect vehicle and contributed significantly to the suspect being identified and arrested within approximately eight hours of the shooting," Patchin said.

Patchin said the case illustrated the value of regional cooperation.

"This case demonstrates how technology, combined with outstanding investigative work and regional law enforcement partnerships, can help bring violent offenders into custody quickly," he said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Richmond Police Department Investigations Bureau at (510) 621-1288.
