Richmond police arrested a 61-year-old man Tuesday night on suspicion of murdering his older brother following a fight at a Potrero Avenue residence, authorities said.

Jerome Timmons, 68, of Richmond, was found unresponsive at a home in the 4500 block of Potrero Avenue at approximately 9:09 p.m. after officers responded to assist fire and medical personnel on a medical call. Paramedics were already performing life-saving measures when officers arrived and determined Timmons' injuries appeared to be the result of an assault. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers quickly identified Victor Blacknell, 61, also of Richmond, as the suspect. Investigators determined the two men were brothers.

"The preliminary investigation indicates Timmons and Blacknell were involved in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation," said Lt. Joseph England in a statement.

Following the assault, Blacknell fled the scene. Officers tracked him to a residence in the 1500 block of Maine Avenue, where he was taken into custody without incident.

"Officers quickly developed information regarding Blacknell's whereabouts," England said.

Blacknell was booked on one count of murder in violation of California Penal Code 187(a) and is being held on $1 million bail.

Detectives from the RPD Homicide Unit are continuing to investigate what led to the altercation.

"The investigation remains in its early stages," England said.
