El Agave Azul is located in our favorite food districts in Richmond, where so many delicious burrito artists create their foil-wrapped art in the North & East, Tacos El Tucan, Mi Casa Grill, 3 Hermanas, Taqueria La Bamba, Angel’s Restaurant, Mi Casita Mariscos food truck and the best of the La Flor de Jalisco food truck which is parked on the El Agave Azul property.

El Agave Azul occupies a peculiar spot in Richmond’s culinary landscape. From the front window, diners can see La Flor de Jalisco food truck, while the view across the street includes a tire shop.

El Agave Azul, located on San Pablo Avenue, opened its doors in 2019, occupying the space that once housed the beloved local institution Gonzales Restaurant.
For longtime Richmond residents, this transition carries emotional weight. Gonzales wasn’t just a restaurant, it was a community gathering place where civic organizations held meetings and families celebrated milestones for decades. Why did it take so long to finally visit El Agave Azul? Maybe we were holding a grudge.
Walking into El Agave Azul, you’re immediately struck by how much larger the space feels than expected. The restaurant boasts multiple dining areas, including a substantial patio and bar area, as well as additional seating in the front, making it perfect for rehearsal dinners and large gatherings — something which helped to make Gonzales a favorite.
We ordered a Carnitas Super Burrito and a Chile Relleno Plate since we’ve been sampling every Chile Relleno in town.

The Carnitas Super Burrito arrives generously stuffed in a properly toasted tortilla, filled with tender, juicy meat, refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, and shredded jack cheese. The carnitas release their savory oils into the tortilla, giving a crispy, satisfying, almost fried crunch. Fresh pico de gallo adds brightness with its mix of cilantro, tomatoes, and onions.
The rice deserves special mention. It’s exactly what Spanish rice should be. Fluffy, flavorful without being overdone, neither dried out nor soggy. It doesn’t glom together, and each grain has absorbed just the right amount of seasoning. The most similar burrito is Taqueria La Bamba’s Super Carnitas Burrito.
The salsa strikes a nice balance with a gentle heat that builds gradually, allowing the flavors to come through before the spice kicks in. It’s fresh-tasting and well-executed and comes with thin, crispy chips.
El Agave Azul’s Chile Relleno is one of the best Chile Rellenos of the local options, earning particular praise. It’s a classic Chile Relleno, not stylized, but prepared with a sophisticated sauce that layers flavors. For the plate, instead of one large, difficult-to-manage stuffed pepper, they gave you two freshly made piping hot Chile Rellenos, which come with rice and beans and freshly made flour or corn tortillas.
The downside? Our Super Burrito weighed just 625 grams and set us back $17.95 plus tax, which was within spitting distance of the $22.95 Chiles Rellenos Plate. While we enjoyed this burrito, it is too small and too expensive to make it into our regular rotation.
Let us know where to eat next, and check back next week to see where we land on the Richmond Burrito Trail.
