A Point Richmond Thanksgiving with turkey and zen — here to make America mellow again

The Annual Point Richmond Turkey Shoot celebration returned on Thanksgiving Day, marking 35 years of the beloved community tradition.

Community members gathered in the picturesque neighborhood to partake in the festivities, which included a lively parade, music, and, of course, plenty of Wild Turkey whiskey.

"The most important thing is that you have a shot of premium Wild Turkey whiskey," said longtime resident Andrew Butt as he kicked off the reading of the poem. "and try to save it if you can, till the end."

As part of the festivities, attendees purchase a commemorative shot glass filled with Wild Turkey. A whimsical poem, added to each year, is read aloud by community members. Once everyone has their drink, the poem is recited, and a toast to Thanksgiving is made.

The poem captures a blend of reflection and whimsy, weaving together themes of unity and resilience. While it nods to pivotal moments like the COVID-19 pandemic, Richmond's political shifts, and national turning points, it also injects a playful spirit with its refrain, "This is the annual turkey shoot."

The final verse envisions a mellowing of tensions, embodying gratitude and community in a uniquely Point Richmond Thanksgiving tradition.
