Sasha Curl has announced she will retire after four years as City Manager and more than 20 years of work with the City of Richmond.
The announcement came at the April 21 council meeting when Curl told the council she plans to leave upon the completion of renovation projects at Boorman, Wendell, and Shields-Reid parks.
Curl expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Richmond community and her pride in the city’s achievements during her tenure as city manager.
“It has been the great privilege of my professional career to serve Richmond for over two decades, and I am proud of our many accomplishments on behalf of this extraordinary city,” Curl said. “Our residents are deeply engaged, the City Council is committed, and the city staff are extraordinary in every way. Thank you for the opportunity to serve this remarkable community.”
Among Curl’s accomplishments are the renovation of Richmond's historic Civic Center, revitalization of Hacienda Heights and Nevin Plaza affordable housing developments, Booker T. Anderson Community Center, the launch of Water Emergency Transportation Authority Ferry service, and Richmond Promise.
Curl told Grandview that she loves Richmond and that she has many favorite places within the city. She also spoke of the progress Richmond has made during her time as city manager.
“My favorite places in Richmond are NIAD, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, and RYSE,” Curl said. “During my tenure as City Manager, we have made tremendous progress in the City of Richmond on a host of quality of life issues, including significant reductions in homicides, improvements in the built environment — our main library is currently undergoing a $34 million renovation, and we have three new park projects under construction to bring health-focused zones, including new soccer fields, into the community."
Curl also said that through a partnership with Chief Osorio, they hope to launch an ALS program and bring paramedics into the Richmond Fire Department.
In a statement, Mayor Eduardo Martinez acknowledged Curl’s retirement and recognized her outstanding service to the City. “I want to personally thank her for her years of service and dedication to the City of Richmond,” Martinez said.
