What happened in Richmond: attempted murder, shootings, car thefts

Richmond police responded to a range of incidents between September 29 and October 5, including an attempted murder, multiple shootings at occupied homes, an armed carjacking, a kidnapping, and several sexual offenses. Officers also handled reports of vehicle theft, domestic violence, fraud, and property crimes across the city. Several arrests were made, and multiple stolen vehicles were recovered during the week.

Richmond Police Department Assistant Chief Tim Simmons delivered a report to the Community Police Review Commission, highlighting an uptick in violent crime for September. While overall year-to-date crime statistics are trending down, the month's figures showed a spike in specific offenses.

The rise in violent crime for September included 17 reported sexual assaults (a 183 percent increase over August), 22 aggravated robberies (up 57 percent), and 71 aggravated assaults (an 8 percent increase). Simmons singled out the Iron Triangle as an area of particular concern, mentioning a recent homicide and a significant shooting there. The department reported receiving 33 ShotSpotter activations (a 94% increase).

In contrast, property crime saw some decreases, with burglaries down 38 percent and grand thefts/larcenies down 19 percent. However, vehicle thefts were up 32 percent.

Shooting at dwelling: 600 block of 5th Street. Shots were reportedly fired at an inhabited structure at 4:29 a.m.

Vandalism: 600 block of Harbour Way. Property damage under $400 was reported at 7:16 a.m.

Credit card fraud: 700 block of 20th Street. Police investigated unauthorized use of an access card over $950 that occurred at 7:30 a.m.

Petty theft: 600 block of Virginia Avenue. Officers received a report of theft at 9:27 a.m.

Vehicle recovery: 1000 block of Wright Avenue. Some good news! Police recovered a stolen vehicle at 10:17 a.m.

Vehicle theft: 200 block of Harbour Way South. Police busted a car thief at 11:24 a.m.

Shoplifting: 1200 block of Macdonald Avenue. Store personnel reported unauthorized merchandise removal at 1:33 p.m.

Battery: 11100 block of San Pablo Avenue. Police responded to a report of a physical altercation at 3:13 p.m.

Multiple domestic violence charges: 2300 block of Lancaster Drive. Officers responded to a domestic violence incident that reportedly included criminal threats at 4:06 p.m.

Multiple drug and firearm charges: S 34th/Hoffman area. A suspect was arrested on charges of having marijuana for sale, controlled substances, paraphernalia, and having ammunition at 4:45 p.m.

Reckless driving: In the 94801 zip code. Officers nabbed a dangerous driver at 5:28 p.m.

Criminal threats and vandalism: 2700 block of Moyers Road. A suspect earned some intimidation charges after officers investigated threats that were reportedly accompanied by property damage at 9:50 p.m.

Aggravated assault: 1900 block of Lincoln Avenue. Officers responded to a domestic violence incident with reported property damage over $400 at 11:40 p.m.

Vehicle theft: 3000 block of Groom Drive. A vehicle was reported stolen at 7:02 a.m.

Warrents: In the 94804 zip code. Officers served outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants and recovered a stolen vehicle at 7:10 a.m.

Vehicle theft: In the 94804 zip code. Another vehicle was reported missing at 8:31 a.m.

Vandalism and theft: 1000 block of 23rd Street. Police investigated property damage exceeding $400 that occurred in conjunction with a petty theft at 8:35 a.m.

Grand theft and fraud: 3100 block of Keith Drive. Officers investigated a report of significant theft that allegedly occurred through false pretenses at noon.

Firearm theft: 2500 block of Duke Avenue. A firearm was reported stolen at 12:19 p.m.

Vehicle theft: 200 block of Nevin Avenue. Another vehicle was reported taken without permission at 12:26 p.m.

Possession of obscene matter: 700 block of West Cutting Boulevard. Police investigated an alleged possession of obscene matter at 1:07 p.m.

Drug violation: In the 94804 zip code. Officers reportedly discovered controlled substances at 6:19 p.m.

Vandalism: 400 block of 44th Street. Property damage was reported at 8:40 p.m.

Shooting and attempted murder: 900 block of 9th Street. A man was shot at 8:46 p.m.

Multiple vandalism charges: 2000 block of Potrero Avenue. An individual was arrested in connection with property damage, damage to power lines, and an outstanding probation violation at 10:30 p.m.

Auto burglary and vandalism: 2000 block of Chanslor Avenue. Police responded to a report of a vehicle break-in accompanied by more property damage at 11:00 p.m.

Vehicle theft: 4500 block of Gregory Way. It was reported that someone made off with an automobile in the dead of night at 3:08 a.m.

Vehicle theft: 700 block of Carlson Boulevard. Another car vanished from where it was last seen at 11 a.m.

Grand theft: 1400 block of Hilltop Mall Road. Store personnel reported shoplifting that exceeded the petty theft threshold at 1:38 p.m.

Grand theft: 11900 block of San Pablo Avenue. Officers investigated a cross-jurisdictional major theft at 2:37 p.m.

Contempt of court: 4000 block of Florida Avenue. Police responded to a report of a court order violation at 3 p.m.

Multiple charges: In the 94801 zip code. Officers recovered a stolen vehicle and made arrests for vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and probation violations at 3:19 p.m.

Criminal threats: 700 block of Monarch Court. Police investigated someone making threatening statements at 6:40 p.m.

Police evasion: In the 94530 zip code. Officers reported a suspect fled from them during a traffic stop at 7:29 p.m.

Driving without license: In the 94804 zip code. Officers stopped an unlicensed driver at 8:46 p.m.

Noise complaint: 3900 block of Jenkins Way. Police responded to a community noise disturbance at 1:05 a.m.

Petty theft: 300 block of S 5th Street. Officers received a theft report at 4:12 a.m.

Multiple charges: West Nevin Avenue area. Officers recovered a stolen vehicle from the 1400 block of Longitude Drive at noon.

Drug violation: West Nevin Avenue. Police discovered drug paraphernalia at 12:40 p.m. and controlled substances a few minutes later.

Domestic battery: 800 block of Griffin Drive. Police responded to a spousal violence report at 2:13 p.m.

Petty theft: 2900 block of McKenzie Drive. Auto parts were stolen from a vehicle at 2:16 p.m.

Vehicle theft: 1200 block of MacDonald Avenue. A vehicle was reported stolen at 4:13 p.m.

Vehicle theft: 800 block of Yuba Street. Another vehicle was reported missing at 7:36 p.m.

Robbery: In the 94804 zip code. A strong-arm robbery was reported at 10 p.m.
