What happened in Richmond: An attempted murder, a fireworks bust and 27 stolen cars

Four people were arrested late Saturday after the sound of illegal fireworks echoed through Richmond just before midnight. The arrests capped a week that also included an attempted homicide, an armed carjacking and an arson at an inhabited home, according to information released by the Richmond Police Department.

The arrests came late Saturday night after Richmond police broke up an unsanctioned gathering at Shields-Reid Park that drew more than 300 people, according to Lt. Joe England, the department's public information officer. Officers responded to complaints of loud music, fights and double parking before the crowd grew large enough that police declared an unlawful assembly.

"Officers were met with upward of 300 people, and an unlawful assembly had to be ordered," England said. Richmond police requested mutual aid from surrounding agencies to safely disperse the crowd.

Six fireworks complaints were also reported on Saturday night, but England said those appear to be isolated incidents unrelated to the Shields-Reid gathering. Police also confirmed a sideshow on Klose Way the same night, which officers eventually dispersed.

Monday, July 27

Sexual assault: 700 block of Elm Avenue. A rape by force or fear was reported just before noon.

Domestic violence: 1000 block of Carlson Boulevard. Police arrested a suspect for domestic battery and felony child cruelty at 12:09 p.m.

Central car caper: 4800 block of Central Avenue. A vehicle theft was reported at 12:39 p.m.

Petty theft: 700 block of South 52nd Street. A theft was reported at 2:41 p.m.

Gone through El Portal: 3500 block of El Portal Drive. A vehicle theft was reported at 2:59 p.m.

Hit-and-run: 12600 block of San Pablo Avenue. A hit-and-run property-damage report was filed at 4:40 p.m.

Battery: 1400 block of Kelsey Street. A battery report was received at 5 p.m.

Home burglary: 1200 block of Parkway Drive. A forced-entry residential burglary was reported at 6:16 p.m.

Domestic violence arrest: 2000 block of Costa Avenue. Police arrested a suspect on felony corporal-injury domestic violence charges at 7:30 p.m.

Car theft: 600 block of 17th Street. Another car was spirited away at 10 p.m.

Domestic battery and child cruelty: 3500 block of El Portal Drive. A second report on the block, this one of domestic battery and willful cruelty to a child, was filed at 10:25 p.m.

Resisting arrest: Somewhere in the 94804 zip code. Police arrested a suspect for resisting officers and drug-paraphernalia possession at 11:04 p.m.

Threats arrest: 500 block of South 29th Street. Someone made felony criminal threats and was arrested at 11:17 p.m.

Car theft: Somewhere in the 94804 zip code. Thieves left an empty space at 11:20 p.m.

Tuesday, July 28

Grand theft: Oregon Street. A grand theft was reported at 1 a.m.

Petty theft: 1300 block of Carlson Boulevard. A theft from a vehicle was reported at 1:29 a.m.

Filched on Foothill: 2700 block of Foothill Avenue. A vehicle theft was reported at 6:54 a.m.

Parts theft: 1400 block of Harbour Way South. A theft of motor-vehicle parts was reported at 7:30 a.m.

Fictitious check: 3500 block of Maricopa Avenue. A fictitious-check report was filed at 8:13 a.m.

Hit-and-run: 800 block of Alamo Avenue. A driver hit something and didn’t stick around at 9:25 a.m.

Battery: 300 block of 24th Street. A battery report was filed at 12:57 p.m.

Suspended-license driving: Somewhere in the 94801 zip code. A driver was reportedly operating a vehicle on a DUI-suspended license at 5:12 p.m.

Drug arrest: Somewhere in the 94801 zip code. Officers nabbed someone with drugs at 6:01 p.m.

Petty theft: 900 block of 23rd Street. A theft was reported at 8:03 p.m.
