Multiple road closures remained in effect Friday after a third-alarm fire caused extensive structural damage at the Public Storage facility at 398 Carlson Boulevard, prompting safety concerns, officials said.

Carlson Boulevard is closed between Cutting Boulevard and the Pullman apartment area, and portions of Ethel Dotson South Street are also closed. The closures are expected to remain in place while officials assess the stability of the damaged building.

Richmond firefighters battle blaze at Public Storage facility on Carlson Boulevard
Firefighters battled a fire Wednesday morning at a Public Storage facility at 398 Carlson Boulevard, attacking the blaze from two ladder trucks as heavy smoke rose from the building. Smoke from the fire is visible in the surrounding area, including Ohio Avenue and Carlson Boulevard/South 37th Street, city officials

The fire broke out early Wednesday morning and escalated to a third alarm, drawing assistance from the El Cerrito Fire Department and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. Flames tore through the roof along the Carlson Boulevard side of the building, triggering multiple collapses inside the structure.

Following an inspection by the city’s deputy building official, the tilt-up concrete building was deemed unstable because the roof had been compromised, fire officials said. Authorities said the road closures are necessary to protect the public from potential falling debris or further structural failure.

Fire crews remained on scene, urging pedestrians away from the building.

Officials said the entire property will be fenced off to prevent unauthorized access while the owner determines next steps to secure or remove unstable portions of the structure.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
