A motorist was shot during an incident that began with a traffic collision near South 27th Street and Center Avenue early Saturday morning, according to police officials.

The victim arrived at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center with a gunshot wound, prompting an investigation that led officers to the shooting scene where they recovered evidence, Lt. Donald Patchin, the department’s public information officer, said Monday.

“The incident started with a gunshot victim arriving at Kaiser,” Patchin said. “That prompted an investigation that determined a shooting had occurred in the area of 27th Street and Center Avenue.

According to the initial investigation, the victim was involved in a traffic collision with another vehicle around midnight on Saturday, May 24. When the suspect vehicle attempted to flee without exchanging information, the victim followed in pursuit.

“An occupant of the suspect vehicle produced a firearm and fired upon the victim, striking them,”  Patchin said. “They then drove to Kaiser for medical treatment and are expected to survive their injuries.”

Police have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
