On Thanksgiving morning, and with more than just a little nip in the nearly winter air, a group of revelers, large and small, met at the Plunge before embarking on what seems like an age-old tradition.
At least a hundred people, some families with kids and dogs, and others in costume, joined in the fun of the Point Richmond Turkey Shoot, an annual tradition dating back several decades, displaying both the wit and charm of Richmond’s people.
Despite the name, no turkeys are harmed in this annual celebration, but a good time is had by all, we absolutely guarantee.
It goes something like this: A signal is given, and a lumbering group of merrymakers proceeds, in mass, on a spirited trek around the historic streets that are early Richmond.

Crowd comes out for Point Richmond's annual Turkey Shoot and is greeted by this year's Master of Ceremonies, Andrew Butt.
Once the obligatory jaunt around town is complete, the group comes to rest at a predetermined stop, and all wait patiently for a poem – one that expands by a singular verse each year – to be read. The joy is contagious, and the crowd calls out for more with each passing stanza. At the poem’s conclusion, the group promptly, and with a substantial roar, down a shot (or two) of Wild Turkey Whiskey or apple cider, depending upon preference.
With the mission completed and the crowd slowly dwindling, people head to their prearranged destinations, and another successful Turkey Shoot is in the books. Somewhere in the exiting mass, murmurs about next year’s festivities have already been aired.
