The Richmond Burrito Trail is back on 23rd Street for a visit to the recently opened Mariscos Los Reyes.

The seafood restaurant opened about a month ago on the ground floor of the three-story building at 761 23rd Street, which has seemingly been under construction forever.

The exciting explosion of new taquerias, each presenting their own unique and delicious burrito creations, offers a delightful abundance of choices. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, another innovative flavor combination emerges, further enriching the vibrant burrito landscape. This continuous expansion of the burrito universe presents an exciting opportunity for discovery and endless delicious possibilities.

Mariscos Los Reyes offers a seafood-focused menu with shrimp, ceviche, aguachile, fish, platters, cocktails, and soups like Caldo de Camarón and 7 Mares. They also serve classic dishes, including tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, and traditional soups, plus breakfast dishes. Grilled items, pasta (often with seafood), appetizers, and a kids’ menu are available. The restaurant has a full bar and is open for dine-in and take-out, with karaoke on Thursdays.

Mariscos Los Reyes restaurant presents a clean, modern dining experience with dark tables, wooden chairs, a bar with seating and a TV, and a partially open kitchen.

Los Reyes was doing brisk business when we stopped in during Richmond’s Cinco de Mayo Festival on Sunday. The Mariscada looks so inviting with its various flavors, but this is the Burrito Trail, so we carried on and went with a Super Camarón Burrito and also ordered a Super Vegetariano Burrito.

Always cooked to order and piping hot since you can’t pre-cook the shrimp, we watched eagerly as the chef tossed the crustaceans and red bell peppers on the grill.

The 642-gram Super Shrimp Burrito was absolutely loaded with shrimp and guacamole and rounded out with Spanish rice, refried beans, orange cheese, and sour cream wrapped in a tortilla with a post-construction toasting on the grill. This marks two straight weeks of guacamole on our 23rd Street Burritos!

Mariscos Los Reyes's Super Camarón Burrito is loaded with guacamole and comes with chips and salsa.

Shrimp burritos sing their own song, different but beautiful in their own way. The shrimpiness comes through the whole slab, battling strong guac, onions, cilantro, and cheese flavors.

This is the third Camarón Burrito on the Richmond Burrito Trail, and we enjoyed them all, but for different reasons.

New veggie burrito spot

A new contender has entered the Richmond Burrito Trail veggie burrito scene, and it’s offering a departure from the familiar. Our recent visit revealed a burrito that distinguishes itself from neighborhood staples like Tacos El Tucan, carving out its own niche with a thoughtful balance.

Nothing felt haphazard or dominant. Instead, each element seemed to complement the others, resulting in a well-rounded and satisfying bite. The generous inclusion of creamy guacamole was a definite plus, and the presence of grilled vegetables, including zucchini, bell peppers, and carrots, added a welcome depth of flavor and texture.

The Super Camarón Burrito was Saucy, verging on Soupy on the Richmond Burrito Trail Juiciness Scale. While the Super Vegetariano Burrito was Juicy.

Dry: Minimal to no moisture, potentially crumbly
Balanced: Perfectly moist, neither dry nor dripping
Juicy: Meats or fillings release some liquid, but it’s contained
Saucy: Noticeably coated in sauce; can get a bit messy
Soupy: Overwhelmed by liquid, possibly leaking or spilling

The burritos come with warm, thin, crispy chips and a fresh red tomato salsa with an unexpected heat, all for $34 even.

Let us know where to eat next, and check back next week to see where we land on the Richmond Burrito Trail.
