Five Star Chicken, an international fried chicken chain with thousands of locations across Asia, is preparing to open a new restaurant on San Pablo Avenue in Richmond, filling a storefront that has been empty for years.
The new outlet will move into the long-closed H. Salt Fish & Chips building, a familiar spot along the busy corridor. It sits next to the well-known Flora de Jalisco food truck and across from the headquarters of the Richmond Progressive Alliance. A few blocks south, another chicken option, El Pollo Loco, operates in neighboring San Pablo, setting the stage for a bit of fried and grilled competition along The Avenue.
Five Star Chicken began in 1985 in Bangkok, Thailand, and has since grown into a global franchise with a presence in 10 countries, including India, China, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The company says it now operates more than 8,000 outlets worldwide, serving millions of customers each year.
Five Star Chicken’s expansion into Richmond marks one of its few Northern California locations. The brand entered the U.S. market quietly in recent years, with a small number of West Coast stores.
No official opening date has been announced, but signage has gone up at the San Pablo Avenue site, signaling that work is well underway. The arrival of a global brand to the San Pablo Avenue Food Corridor adds to a growing mix of restaurants and small businesses that draw customers from across Richmond and neighboring cities.
