Firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a brush fire burning along eastbound Interstate 580 near the Bayview Avenue off-ramp, sending up a plume of black smoke visible across Richmond.

The fire was first reported around 2:23 p.m. on the right-hand side of the freeway between the road and the bay, according to California Highway Patrol incident logs. Multiple callers reported seeing flames and heavy smoke in the vegetation beside the eastbound lanes.

Richmond Fire Department crews were dispatched to the scene and reported a working fire shortly before 2:45 p.m. Drivers in the area were advised to use caution as emergency vehicles operated along the freeway shoulder.
