A man armed with an assault-style rifle prompted a large police response and a temporary lockdown in a Richmond neighborhood Wednesday before eluding capture, authorities said.

Officers with the Richmond Police Department responded at 9:56 a.m. to the 4500 block of Florida Avenue after a woman reported that the father of her child had arrived at her home with a rifle and threatened her, according to Lt. Donald Patchin, a spokesperson for the department.

“The victim reported that her child's father had arrived at her residence while armed with an assault-style rifle. The suspect threatened the victim with the firearm. The victim was able to successfully flee the residence with her child, leaving the suspect alone inside the residence,” Patchin said.

Police identified the suspect as Javon Hudson, 22, of Fairfield. After briefly observing Hudson leave the residence, officers lost sight of him and believed he had re-entered the home. A perimeter was established, and attempts were made to contact him, police said.

“After failing to contact the suspect and obtaining a search warrant, RPD SWAT team members conducted a physical search of the residence,” Patchin said. "Officers determined that the suspect was not inside the residence and had managed to escape the perimeter. A search of the residence did result in an assault rifle being recovered."

The incident led to road closures and a lockdown in the surrounding area, including near the Miraflores Senior Apartments at Florida Avenue and South 45th Street. A Mobile Command Center and drones were deployed, and police advised residents to remain indoors until the situation was resolved.
