Tsunami advisory issued for California coast

■ A tsunami advisory remains in effect for the coastal areas of California, including the San Francisoco Bay Area.

The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami watch for the entire California coast, including the San Francisco Bay Area.

The tsunami watch was upgraded to an advisory Tuesday evening, one level before a warning, indicating coastal flooding is possible and residents should stay away from the waterfront.

The advisory is precautionary and follows an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred earlier today near Petropavlovsk Kamchatka off the coast of Russia’s far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, a remote and sparsely populated part of the country.

The NWS estimates the time of arrival could be as early as 12:15 a.m. locally. However, this is only an advisory, and not a warning.

On social media, Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia posted a message urging people to stay away from local waterways.

"There is a potential 1ft wave. We do not currently anticipate any major impact to @CCCounty . However, it is recommended that you stay out of the water, away from beaches and waterways," Gioia said. "Cal Office of Emergency Services is tracking this closely and is keeping our County Emergency Planners informed."

The City of Richmond sent out a Nixle Alert informing residents of the advisory and asking that they be aware of their evacuation zone and continue to monitor conditions.
