Republic Services and Teamsters Local 439 have reportedly reached a tentative agreement to end the strike that disrupted garbage and recycling collection across the Bay Area for nearly two weeks.

“We’ve reached a tentative agreement with Teamsters Local 439 for our Forward Landfill employees,” Republic Services said Friday in a statement. “Local 439 has informed us that picket lines are coming down across the Bay Area, and our employees are returning to work tomorrow.”

Republic pledged to “work hard to catch up with needed recycling and waste collection as quickly as we can” and thanked the community for its patience.

Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia confirmed the development on social media.

“Republic Services and the Teamsters have announced that the strike is over and there has been an agreement in the Stockton labor dispute,” Gioia said. “Regular garbage, recycling, and green waste collection in West County starts up on Monday with local Teamster employees back at work.”

Republic also plans to continue pickups on Saturday to help clear the backlog of waste.

“The County is moving forward with demanding rate relief for residents,” Gioia said.

In Richmond, Mayor Eduardo Martinez said picket lines have cleared, and Republic is working to restore full service.

“We have been informed that the labor strike involving Republic Services has ended,” Martinez said in a statement. “Republic is in the process of calling drivers and restoring full service as quickly as possible.”

To aid residents during the transition, Richmond will maintain temporary disposal options on Saturday, similar to last weekend.

“We thank Richmond residents for their patience and for standing in solidarity with the Teamsters who carried out this action to demand fair treatment and better working conditions,” Martinez said.

Residents are encouraged to check the city’s website and social media for updated service information.
