If you are waiting for your garbage to be picked up today, forget about it. A nationwide strike is affecting local waste removal, cancelling all scheduled pickups for Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.

Country Supervisor John Gioia posted a statement on social media after learning about the local impact.

"Our office has been notified that Republic Services garbage collection services in West County will not occur today, and likely will not occur tomorrow," Gioia wrote.

Gioa said this is due to drivers not crossing a picket line, which was set up to support workers who are on strike at a Republic-owned Landfill near Stockton.

"We have been told that pick-up services will hopefully be resumed this Thursday, which means your garbage pick up will be delayed by a couple of days and should be picked up on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday," Gioia said.

Republic Services says that it is notifying customers by phone, although comments on social media indicate many local residents have received a puzzling email citing severe weather as the cause of the delay in garbage service.

Republic Services reached out to Grandview with the following statement:

Republic Services is in contract negotiations with IBT 439, the union representing some of our employees at Forward Landfill. Those employees are engaged in a temporary work stoppage, and are picketing at other Republic Services Bay Area locations. Forward Landfill is one of four locations in North America where the Teamsters have called a work stoppage. As a result, we anticipate temporary service delays for some recycling and waste collection customers in the Bay Area. We are making adjustments to our operations to ensure our ability to continue providing service during this situation.  We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this situation may cause. We remain ready to reach a fair agreement with the union that benefits our employees and our customers.

The waste management company also stated that, in an attempt to notify customers in the Bay Area of service changes, the weather was incorrectly cited as the cause.

"We apologize to our customers for this notification error," the statement said.
