A stretch of Cutting Boulevard will be closed starting Friday night while Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway installs new track panels at a railroad crossing that serves one of Richmond's industrial corridors, city officials said.

The closure, which runs from Hoffman Boulevard to South 4th Street, takes effect at 7 p.m. Friday and is expected to lift by 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the city manager's weekly report.

BNSF crews will install prefabricated 80-foot track panels to address what officials described as a critical rail safety issue at the crossing. The work is intended to improve long-term reliability of the crossing, the report said.

City officials urged motorists to plan alternate routes for the duration of the closure.
