A man was fatally shot in Richmond on Friday night, marking the city’s second homicide of 2025. The shooting was reported around 8:37 p.m. near 8th Street and Lincoln Avenue, where officers responded after ShotSpotter technology detected gunfire.
According to Richmond Police public information officer Lt. Donald Patchin, the RPD Communications Center received a ShotSpotter activation in the 800 block of Lincoln Avenue, and simultaneously, reports of shots fired began coming in – with one individual reported to have been struck by gunfire.
"Officers responded and located one victim, a male adult, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene,” Patch said in a statement. “RPD Homicide detectives are investigating. No arrests have been made at this time. This, unfortunately, marks the second homicide of the year for the City of Richmond.”
Lincoln Avenue was closed between 7th and 9th Streets for several hours Thursday night as investigators processed the crime scene. Police advised residents to avoid the area and use alternative routes while the investigation is ongoing.
Family and friends have identified the victim as Jerry Williams through a GoFundMe campaign created to support his loved ones with funeral expenses. The fundraiser describes Williams as a “lovable, funny, sweet, hardworking man who went above and beyond to make everyone’s day better.” Organizers said all donations will go directly to his family, who are mourning his sudden loss.
The campaign notes that Williams “meant so much to so many people and will be missed incredibly.” As of Monday morning, the fundraiser had begun collecting contributions from community members seeking to honor his memory and help cover funeral costs.
