San Pablo police arrest high school student after shooting near elementary school

A 16-year-old Richmond High School student was arrested Tuesday after a shooting near Downer Elementary School prompted a lockdown on the campus, according to the San Pablo Police Department.

Officers responded at 9:42 a.m. to reports of gunfire at 20th Street and Sanford Avenue, about a block from the school, the San Pablo Police Department said in a statement. A witness told officers they heard shots and saw a male suspect pointing a handgun at a vehicle with tinted windows. Both the suspect and the vehicle fled in opposite directions.

Responding officers found shell casings in the street but no victims or suspects. Because of the shooting’s proximity to the school, an officer contacted school officials, and the campus was locked down as a precaution.

Detectives developed leads identifying a juvenile as the suspected shooter. Officers served a search warrant at a home on the 1800 block of Wilcox Avenue, arresting a 22-year-old man on suspicion of being an accessory.

Evidence tied to the shooting was recovered, police said.

The juvenile suspect was later found in class at Richmond High School and taken into custody without incident. He was booked into Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall on a firearms-related charge.

The Downer Elementary campus remained on lockdown until about 1:40 p.m. Police believe the incident was isolated and that the vehicle’s occupants were the intended targets. It is not known if anyone was injured.
