Richmond police are investigating the city’s first homicide of the year after a man was found fatally shot Thursday morning at Triangle Court Apartments.

Officers responded to the 900 block of 9th Street at 6:44 a.m. following reports of a man down. When they arrived, they located an unresponsive male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

“Medical personnel responded and pronounced the victim deceased,” the Richmond Police Department said in a statement.

Police said a ShotSpotter gunfire detection alert was received at 11:46 p.m. the night before, on July 9, indicating possible gunfire in the 900 block of 8th Street. That location is one block west of where the victim was later found. Officers responded to the area after the alert but did not locate any evidence of a shooting at that time.

The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Homicide detectives with the Richmond Police Department are leading the investigation. Authorities ask anyone with information to contact the RPD Investigations Bureau at (510) 620-6616.

The killing marks Richmond’s first homicide of 2025, ending what had been a rare nine-month stretch without a reported killing. Prior to Thursday, the city had not recorded a homicide since October 2024.

During a July 2 meeting of the Richmond Police Commission, Police Chief Bisa French acknowledged the unusually long period without a homicide but noted that she avoids publicizing such milestones.

“We haven’t had a homicide since October of last year, and we’re very proud of that,” French said. “But I try not to talk about it because we think it’s superstitious. The last time a chief did that, we had one that same night.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been announced as of Thursday.
