Richmond police officers fatally shot a man Monday evening who they say confronted them with at least one knife outside a home where he had allegedly been threatening to kill people, authorities said.

Officers responded just after 5 p.m. to a 911 call reporting an armed individual inside a residence in the 400 block of 1st Street, the Richmond Police Department said in a statement. The caller reported the man was armed with at least one knife and had made threats to harm others.

Police said officers heard a disturbance coming from inside the home as dispatchers relayed updates indicating the man had armed himself with a second edged weapon. When officers approached the front door and announced themselves, they were "immediately confronted" by the suspect outside the residence, police said.

Two officers fired their weapons, striking the man. He died at the scene. Authorities have not released his name.

"The subject, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at the scene," Lt. Donald Patchin, a Richmond Police Department spokesperson, said in a statement.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting under the county’s Law Enforcement Involved Fatal Incident Protocol.

“We are dedicated to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation,” Patchin said. “As new information emerges, we will update the public through press releases posted on the Richmond Police Department’s website.”

Monday’s incident marks the department’s second officer-involved fatal shooting this year. On February 4, 2025, Richmond officers shot and killed a wanted suspect after a 32-minute standoff along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks near Carlson Boulevard. That shooting also remains under investigation.
