A Richmond man has been charged with attempted murder after prosecutors say he attacked his spouse, an AC Transit bus driver, with a knife and pepper spray aboard a bus near the Richmond BART station earlier this week.
Mandingo Alfroconus Hayes, 54, faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including attempted murder with an enhancement for use of a knife, two counts of injuring a spouse, resisting arrest, disobeying a court order, and unlawful possession of tear gas, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.
The attack happened around 7:35 a.m. Monday on an AC Transit bus. Prosecutors said Hayes assaulted the driver, who had just completed her shift, causing knife wounds and pepper spray exposure. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Hayes is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on more than $1.1 million bail. Because the victim is his spouse, the case is being prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Unit.
“Our office is committed to holding offenders accountable while ensuring survivors of domestic abuse receive the protection and support they need,” District Attorney Diana Becton said in a statement.
Hayes is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday afternoon in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez.
