Firefighters battled a fire Wednesday morning at a Public Storage facility at 398 Carlson Boulevard, attacking the blaze from two ladder trucks as heavy smoke rose from the building.

Smoke from the fire is visible in the surrounding area, including Ohio Avenue and Carlson Boulevard/South 37th Street, city officials said. There is no need for residents to shelter in place, but officials advised people nearby to remain vigilant while crews continue response operations.

According to Richmond Fire Chief Aaron Osorio, the fire quickly escalated to a third alarm, requiring assistance from the El Cerrito Fire Department and Contra Costa County Fire.

"The blaze ran the length of the roof on the main building along the Carlson Boulevard side, causing multiple roof collapses throughout the structure," Osorio said. "Richmond Fire still has crews on scene trying to extinguish some of the deep-seated fire that is trapped under portions of the collapsed roof."

Osorio said one firefighter sustained minor injuries and was treated at Kaiser Richmond. No civilian injuries have been reported. Four occupants were displaced from an apartment unit and the Public Storage office. The Red Cross is on scene assisting with firefighter rehabilitation.
