The Richmond Police Department is investigating a series of sexual battery incidents in the Point Richmond area that have targeted individuals exercising alone during daylight and early evening hours.
Police said the suspect has approached victims and made unwanted physical contact before fleeing. Most incidents occurred along popular walking and jogging paths, including the Point Richmond Tunnel and Keller Beach.
On Nextdoor, Emma Mueller reported a woman was attacked in the Point Richmond Tunnel today, Tuesday, July 15.
"I was bringing some books to the lending library behind the Plunge and heard screaming and went to check," Mueller said. "She got away by the time I got there with the help of a driver noticing something off in the tunnel, and is safe."
Mueller said police arrived within minutes, but the man managed to escape.
The suspect is described as a Black male adult, 40 to 50 years old, 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet tall, with an average build.
Police said they are dedicating all available resources to identify and apprehend the suspect. The police department is also urging the community to take precautions when exercising outdoors.
Community safety tips include staying alert and avoiding distractions, exercising with a partner or in a group, and choosing well-lit and populated paths. Residents should also vary their routines, carry a whistle or personal alarm, and trust their instincts. Police advise leaving an area and reporting any suspicious activity immediately if something feels unusual.
The Richmond Police Department requests that anyone with information related to these incidents or who has observed suspicious activity in the Point Richmond area contact them at their non-emergency line, 510-233-1214, or call 911 for emergencies.
