Hundreds of West Contra Costa County residents gathered on Saturday afternoon in El Sobrante, El Cerrito, San Pablo, and Hercules to participate in a national day of action called "No Kings," protesting what organizers described as increasingly authoritarian politics.
The demonstration, organized by Indivisible West Contra Costa County, was part of a nationwide mobilization held on June 14, coinciding with Flag Day and what organizers said was planned as a military parade by President Trump in Washington, D.C.
"We are here with hundreds of people from West County saying, no kings in America, no kings in El Sobrante, no kings in Richmond," said Judy Weatherly from the local organizing group. "We are not going to be scared of your violence. We're not going to be scared by your killing of innocent people."

Weatherly described the turnout as unprecedented for the area. "This has been a real effort to get all these people here, and we are so excited to be here and to show this level of strength here in West County," she said. "This is new for us. We have never seen this size of a demonstration in West County."
The El Sobrante event was one of several held across the region, with similar demonstrations in other parts of the Bay Area.

Beyond the protest, organizers announced the launch of ongoing community support efforts, including a weekly food drive. "We're starting our food drive at this event, and we're doing that food drive every Friday night at our Friday night events," Weatherly said. The group plans to meet from 5 to 6 p.m. every Friday and will supply food to a station at the Moose Lodge established by a local Girl Scout troop.
"This is an ongoing effort to be there for our community, because we know it's going to get rough," Weatherly said.
The "No Kings" movement, according to organizing materials, describes itself as a response to what participants view as "increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption" in the current administration. Organizers emphasized their commitment to nonviolent action and encouraged participants to de-escalate any potential confrontations.

The demonstrations come amid broader national political tensions, with organizers framing their actions as a defense of democratic principles and opposition to what they characterize as attempts to consolidate power.
