

Rumors of La Lupita’s closure, it turns out, were greatly exaggerated.
Richmond woke up to the first rain of the season, a steady, soaking, swampy drizzle that left streets slick and tree branches glistening under the gray morning sky. We woke up with one thing on our mind: a breakfast burrito. Word had been swirling online that La Lupita Mexican Eatery, the burrito provider tucked along Meeker Avenue, had shut its doors.

But when we rolled up in the drizzle, the smell of bacon and grilled tortillas drifting into the parking lot told a different story: La Lupita is very much alive and still rolling out burritos built for serious appetites.


We went straight for the Bacon Breakfast Burrito, and when we plopped it on the kitchen scale, it came in at a formidable 688 grams – nearly a pound and a half of breakfast bliss.
Inside, the layers were textbook perfect: fluffy scrambled eggs, big chunks of well-seasoned potatoes, and a scoop of Pico de Gallo that, while unexpected, was not unwelcome. So you get some grilled onions with the potatoes and some crunchy freshness with the Pico.

The burrito was still piping hot when we arrived back at Grandview Headquarters. The cheese was fully melted throughout, clinging to the fillings in every bite. The star, though, was the bacon, cooked to an audible crunch that gave the whole burrito a satisfying texture.
For just one extra dollar, we added refried beans, which brought a creamy, savory balance to the crispy bacon and hearty potatoes. If there was one quibble, it was the tortilla, which leaned slightly gummy this time.
When we first visited La Lupita last year as part of our Richmond Burrito Trail series, we praised its straightforward approach to burrito-making. This visit felt like a reunion with an old friend. On a gray, soggy morning, that burrito wasn’t just breakfast. It was proof that some Richmond classics remain standing strong, even when the rumor mill suggests otherwise.
