Drivers crossing the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge should prepare for significant delays next week as Caltrans implements nightly lane closures for maintenance work.
The California Department of Transportation announced Thursday that multiple lanes on Interstate 580 will be closed each night from Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 13, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The closures will affect traffic from the toll plaza to the western end of the bridge in Marin County. On the eastbound lower deck, lanes 2 and 3 will be shut down throughout the work period. Additionally, lane 2 on the westbound upper deck will be closed Wednesday night only.
Despite the closures, Caltrans officials said at least one lane will remain open in each direction during all work hours. The agency is advising motorists to expect delays and consider alternate routes or allow extra travel time for their commutes.
"Motorists should expect minor delays, reduce speed, and plan extra travel time," Caltrans said in a statement. The department will deploy changeable message signs to alert drivers ahead of the closure zones.
For real-time traffic updates, drivers can visit 511.org or Caltrans QuickMap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov. State highway conditions are also available by calling 1-800-427-ROAD.
