Police are conducting an investigation after a deceased individual was discovered near the campus of DeJean Middle School this morning.
Richmond Police Department officers responded to a call of an unresponsive person at 33rd Street and Macdonald Avenue at 8:02 a.m., near the front of the school at 3400 Macdonald Avenue.
According to DeJean Middle School Principal Athena Valdez, the subject was not associated with the school community.
The Richmond Police Department confirmed the ongoing death investigation. The subject's cause of death is unknown at this time, and investigators are on scene, the department said.
"Although the location is close to De Jean Middle School, we want to reassure our community that the school has not been impacted and there is no danger to students and staff," Richmond Police Public Information Officer Lt. Donald Patchin said. "We are in direct communication with school officials to keep them informed, and investigators are on scene."
Principal Valdez issued an "Important Update" to school families, stating that law enforcement is currently on site and the school is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Both the school and the RPD sought to reassure the community, stating that all students and staff were "in class and safe" and continuing a normal school day, and there is no danger to students and staff.
Families and visitors were asked by the school to "avoid the area near McDonald Avenue and 33rd Street" where police activity is taking place.
The RPD stated it would provide additional updates as information becomes available.
