Flor Hermosa is a coffee stand tucked inside Golden Gate Palms, a nursery that bills itself as California's largest subtropical nursery. Walking the grounds, it's easy to see why. Rows of palms and banana trees stretch well beyond what you'd expect from a Richmond nursery lot, with string lights hanging between the trees.

****If you go:** Flor Hermosa, 425 Cutting Boulevard, Richmond, inside Golden Gate Palms Nursery.

Six stops into this crawl, this is the one to beat on setting alone. Nothing else has come close.

What's the Buzz is a running survey of coffee shops around Richmond, the independent roasters and cafes staking a claim on a corner and making their case one cup at a time. The rule is simple: Order what the staff normally orders and report back on whether it's worth the trip.

Just across Cutting Boulevard are train tracks and a scrap metal yard, the kind of industrial edge that runs through much of this part of Richmond. Inside the nursery gates, none of it registers. The palms close in, the string lights take over, and the outside world fades away.

At Flor Hermosa, an old VW bus sits near the coffee stand, with a canoe strapped to the roof and a Thrasher magazine sticker still stuck to the front. Plants have grown around the bus as if the nursery claimed it years ago and never let go.

The coffee counter itself is simple. A small trailer with the Flor Hermosa flower logo on the front, a chalkboard menu, a basket of pastries, and papel picado strung overhead.

A black-and-white cat had claimed the concrete table next to ours and was in no hurry to give it up, rolling onto its back next to a pot of succulents as if the furniture belonged to it. Nobody seemed surprised.

The scene at Flor Hermosa: the counter and menu tucked into its trailer, papel picado strung overhead, and the resident cat claiming a table among the succulents at Golden Gate Palms nursery in Richmond.

We ordered a vanilla latte, a dark chocolate mocha and a cappuccino.

The mocha tasted like chocolate first and coffee second, which is the job description for a dark chocolate mocha. After an earlier stop that handed us something closer to a hot sauce latte than coffee, that alone counted as a relief.

The vanilla latte met the assignment, too. It tasted like a vanilla latte is supposed to taste, with nothing chasing it off course.

The cappuccino was the one with something to say. There was no shortage of foam, a thick ring of it right to the edge, but it was airy rather than dense, with loose bubbles instead of tight microfoam. The coffee underneath still tasted good, with full flavor and the roast coming through.

The menu leans playful and specific to the stand. There is a cookie butter latte, iced hazelnut mocha, flan latte and mazapán latte, along with seasonal drinks that rotate often enough that regulars check Instagram before heading over.

The coffee holds up under the flavor add-ins instead of disappearing beneath them, which isn't a given at a place that leans into syrups and specialty drinks.

That turned into a running argument in the car afterward, the kind that's been building over several stops on this crawl.

One position: Most of these Richmond coffee shops aren't all that different from each other. That's not a knock. It means the bar around here is consistently decent rather than a coin flip.

The counter position: Fine isn't the same as good, and a review ought to be able to tell the difference.

The cat had wandered off by the time we left, presumably to claim some other surface in the sun.

On setting alone, nothing else on this crawl comes close. The coffee doesn't need to be the best in Richmond to make this stop worth it. On a morning with nowhere else to be, it wouldn't take much to talk us into coming back just to sit here again.
