A Richmond police officer was shot Thursday night while responding to a mental health check on Key Boulevard near the Richmond-El Cerrito border. The suspect inside the home then barricaded herself and continued firing, police said.

The gunfire struck neighboring homes, vehicles and a patrol car as officers surrounded the residence and residents were asked to shelter-in-place. The woman was eventually taken into custody without Richmond officers firing their weapons.

Police Chief Tim Simmons said the incident began around 6:41 p.m. when A3, Contra Costa County's behavioral health crisis response program, requested a Richmond officer accompany its crisis workers to the 2200 block of Key Boulevard for a welfare check.

"When the first officer arrived on scene to the residence, the officer was almost immediately struck by gunfire," Simmons said. "The suspect barricaded herself inside the residence and continued firing numerous rounds indiscriminately in multiple locations throughout the residence."

Richmond's SWAT team responded, along with officers from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office, the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department, and the El Cerrito Police Department.

The Richmond Police Department's Crisis Negotiations Team established contact with the woman and tried to persuade her to surrender. Officers eventually deployed chemical agents into the home.

Investigators do not yet know what prompted the original welfare check. England said the department expects to release the woman's name, age, residence and charges Friday.

Police did not have an estimate of exactly how many rounds were fired or know what type of weapon was used.

"I'm not sure at this point what all the weapons were," Simmons said.

Asked whether the gunfire was rapid or automatic, Simmons said that remained under investigation. Asked for a rough estimate of the number of rounds fired, he said, "Multiple, several, several."

The officer, who has served with the department for more than 20 years, was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. He is in serious but stable condition and is expected to survive, Simmons said.
